Iraqi Kurdistan has lost around 20 million acres of natural oak forest in the past 20 years due to several factors, including climate change. This loss threatens the region with drought, desertification, ecosystem collapse, water resource loss, and rural-urban migration. A group of dedicated young people initiated the Million Oaks Planting Project in response to these challenges, and since 2021, the Kurdistan Regional Government has allocated land for the project. The project aims to create a sustainable urban forest that serves the ecosystem and combats climate change, starting with a 120m road in Erbil City.
